One afternoon, six questions

Six questions arrived for a hens feature. Nyree sat down to answer them and, as she told the journalist when she sent them through, one afternoon somehow turned into the next morning.

There was a lot she wanted to explain. Why the organiser deserves to enjoy the night she has put so much love into. Why the friends around the bride matter as much as the setting. And why a detail nobody notices can be the reason everyone gets to stay in the moment.

There were stories, too. Grazing platters overboard. A wedding called off and a hens that went ahead. Ten bridesmaids celebrating ten different chapters of one woman’s life.

It started with noticing

My Ultimate Hens background and its role in the event space and roughly how many hens parties have been thrown?

I started My Ultimate Hens back in 2011 with a really simple idea: every bride-to-be deserves to feel like the star of their own story. I had been to too many hens nights that felt rushed, awkward, or cobbled together from whatever venues would take a booking. I wanted to create something that felt effortless, elevated, and actually let the organiser enjoy the night as much as the hen.

From the very beginning, we decided we were not going to be an ‘agency’ or a hens planner that stitched things together. We wouldn’t plan the hens night. We would be the hens night. That became the DNA of My Ultimate Hens. Our iconic hens party packages are choreographed from start to finish so the essence of cherishing the bride to be never dips.

Almost Fifteen Years of Celebration

Almost fifteen years in, with hundreds of My Ultimate crew members across Australia, we are still just a passionate team who live and breathe celebration, and we have never lost sight of what a hens truly represents. Beneath the sparkle and the champagne, a hens party is one of the few modern rituals that lets the bride-to-be stop the noise of life and honour the friendships that raised and continue to inspire them.

Every single weekend, across cities around the country, our own My Ultimate Hens crew, drag queens, bartenders, drivers, entertainers, are out there delivering packages designed to keep that essence at the heart of every celebration. It is this blend of choreography and heart that makes it all feel so seamless when you are experiencing it.

Behind the Sequins

If we peek behind the sequins, what people do not see (because they are too busy celebrating, which is the whole idea) is the invisible work that makes it all happen.

The thousand moving parts that make a My Ultimate Hens package completely unique include negotiating placements, timing drinks to the first toast, briefing every entertainer on tone and pacing, and even working with councils on limo pick-up zones so no one is walking across town in heels. All those unseen decisions are what make it feel effortless for the bride-to-be, the bridesmaids, and their guests on the day.

At its core, My Ultimate Hens is about connection. We celebrate friendship, laughter, and the people who make these events happen; the bride-to-be’s ride-or-dies. More Than Fun & Novelty

People often joke about hens or bucks parties in that Hangover-style way, saying they are tacky or just penis straw vibes. Now I am as much of a woo girl as anyone else, do not get me wrong! I will sing Shania on the bar counter for sure. However, I also think that when that is the only part of a hens that is focused on, it gives such a shallow understanding of what this ritual is really about.

For me, in creating My Ultimate Hens and having had the privilege of working with thousands of best friends of brides over the years, my team and I see something so much more. That is the opportunity for a tangible moment of connection, a ritual of joy, belonging, and nostalgia. It is a sacred ritual.

A Sacred Ritual

We so rarely have the chance to step back from the headless chook chaos of our lives. Friendships get caught up in the “sorry I forgot to reply” or the “let’s schedule a catch-up in three months that we will then reschedule three more times.” Hens parties present this rare and concrete tradition where we can actually take time out and give ourselves permission we never needed, to celebrate the energy of connection, play, and femininity in all its forms.

It is a love letter to that shared language we grew up speaking: the sleepovers, the inside jokes, the karaoke courage, the shoulder squeezes, the way we hype each other up.

How Hens Have Evolved

Whilst the essence of celebration that comes with a hens has never changed, when we first launched our packages in 2011, the landscape was so different in terms of how that was translated; at first it was all about cupcake making, and Shakira was huge, so belly dancing was a signature part of the hens experience. Over the years, different trends have come and gone, of course!

Do you have any especially unique or funny anecdotes from your years of My Ultimate Hens packages?

Oh, absolutely! Behind every polished, Pinterest-worthy hens party there is an amazing My Ultimate Hens team of people quietly making magic happen behind the scenes, usually in heels!

Story one

Platters overboard

One that still makes me laugh was in Sydney when we were all hands on deck (literally!) setting up one of our luxury yachts for Britt Hockley’s hens. I do not know if Britt even knows this story actually! Myself and some of our Sydney based team were there early getting everything perfect, and I was just so excited because I am a big fan of the Life Uncut podcast and have followed Britt since she was on the Bachelor.

So here I am, filming content for our My Ultimate Hens socials, holding a couple of gorgeous grazing platters, hair done, sparkly heels on. The platters looked incredible, the day was stunning, and then I went to step onto our My Ultimate Hens yacht...and in my excitement had forgotten that the wharf has uneven timber! I missed my footing completely, and the next thing I knew, the platters, my sunnies, and just about everything else went flying into the water.

It was one of those moments that stops time for a second, and then the entire team just howled with laughter, including me. We could not even breathe for a while there. Probably my fave photo in my entire My Ultimate Hens career is the one of me covered in crumbs, with my hair full of feta and rosemary sprigs cry laughing at the end of the jetty with my team (although it will never leave our office!)

We still joke about it at MU-HQ. The team even printed screenshots from the video and plastered them all over my office wall! It’s become a bit of a badge of honour now, a reminder that even when everything looks luxe, the reality behind the scenes is still gloriously human. And yes, we had new platters and personalised cookies sorted within hours, all before the event. The bride-to-be never knew a thing!

Story two

Dodged a Bullet

The wedding was off. The hens was still on.

Of course, not every funny story involves feta. One of my favourite recent My Ultimate Hens package memories was when a bride-to-be called off her wedding after discovering her fiancé had been unfaithful, and decided to keep the hens party anyway. She called us and let us know what was happening, and we flipped the whole package into a “Dodged a Bullet” theme.

She wore her wedding dress to the hens, the bridesmaids wore theirs, her mum even wore her mother-of-the-bride outfit. We set up one of our paintball packages with targets of the ex’s face, then they finished the night in their paint-covered gowns on one of My Ultimate party buses singing every glow-up anthem from Flowers to Single Ladies. It was iconic!

What has never changed since we began in 2011 is our understanding that celebration is a kaleidoscope of different ideas and budgets. From low-key and close-knit to luxuriously over the top, every version holds the same emotional magic and is about the hen’s main-character moment! The magic of a My Ultimate Hens package is not determined by how much is spent, but by how deeply it celebrates and resonates with the person at the centre of it all; the hen!

Ten bridesmaids. Ten days.

What is the most OTT hens package My Ultimate Hens has thrown?

I often get asked what the most over-the-top package we have is, and recently one of our amazing brides reached a whole new level, and it was totally iconic. She was a bride-to-be with ten bridesmaids who decided that ten bridesmaids meant ten days of celebrating. They booked one of our My Ultimate Hens penthouses on the Gold Coast for ten days, and each bridesmaid was responsible for one day’s celebration. We worked with each of them to help choose a different My Ultimate Hens package that reflected how they knew the bride.

What can people do to make sure their hens party is enjoyable for everyone, and are there any major no-nos?

The most memorable hens nights all have one thing in common: they balance sparkle and excitement with a sense of effortlessness. Part of the magic is that the hen does not have to make sure everything runs smoothly, they can actually be in the moment. The best hens happen because the thought and care from the bridesmaids and the package involved have already curated everything behind the scenes. Over the years, we have seen some clear patterns in what makes a celebration sparkle, and what can quietly flatten it.

  1. 01Polish the cowgirl boots.

    The bride is the heartbeat of the celebration. We hear this all the time: “The bride really wants to do a rodeo theme, but we have all been to so many rodeo hens recently, so we might skip it.” No. Do that. If that is what feels like a celebration to the hen, lean in. The goal is not to impress the group chat, it is to create a night that feels true to the person at the centre of it all.

    One of the biggest mistakes we see is a maid of honour trying to please everyone by collecting endless opinions. When you ask fifteen people what the hen should do, you will get fifteen different answers and fifteen different budgets. It is easy to lose the heart of it. Bring it back to the bride and let that guide every choice you make, from which activities you choose to how the night unfolds.

  3. 03Keep the sparkle high, not the pace.

    A great hens does not mean squeezing every possible activity into the day. Build in moments for connection, laughter, nostalgia, and even practical pauses like time to change outfits from day to night. People need space to relax, chat, and soak it all in.
