Melbourne’s Free Tram Zone is genuinely useful when the plan stays inside the city centre. The difficulty starts when the lovely collection of ideas you saved lives in four completely different parts of Melbourne: one thing in the CBD, dinner in South Yarra, something else in Richmond, then somebody has found a bar “only ten minutes away”.
Ten minutes for one person is not ten minutes for a hens group. If the itinerary needs transport, decide that while it is still an itinerary. If it does not, keep the route tight enough that everybody can stay in the same hens without spending the night travelling between it.

Melbourne does hens in pockets, and the best days pick one rather than trying to do them all.
The CBD is the easy default: rooftops, dinners, dance floors and everything close enough to walk in heels. Southbank and the Yarra River are the waterfront version, with riverside rooftops and two-hour river cruises. South Yarra and Chapel Street do the glossier, dressed-up night. Fitzroy and St Kilda come into it when the package does. And the Yarra Valley is its own thing: a winery day out of the city, or the whole weekend.

Melbourne has weekends when half the country seems to have decided to visit at once: Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, AFL Finals, Melbourne Cup Carnival, Australian Open, New Year’s Eve and major concert weekends. They do not make a hens impossible. They do make popular accommodation, private spaces and good Saturday times considerably more interesting.

Choose the base around the hens you are actually having. CBD works beautifully when the package moves around central Melbourne. Southbank works for riverfront plans, boats and a central weekend base. South Yarra makes sense when Chapel Street and the south-side version of Melbourne are doing most of the work.
A cheaper apartment nowhere near the hens becomes surprisingly expensive in patience once everybody is trying to get back there after midnight. The accommodation should make the weekend easier. The hens should not spend its life commuting back to the accommodation.
