This group has been saying it would try axe throwing one day since long before anyone was engaged. Then the bride said yes to something much bigger, and one day suddenly had a date. Throw Down Before The Gown Weekend finally ticks it off, with the Ultimate Hens Bachelorette Pad Apartment as home base. Did someone say seating chart rage? This is a much healthier outlet.
It starts with a lane, a target and an axe in your hand. All the gear, a safety briefing and quick coaching from an AXEpert, and then it's your turn. The first throw bounces off. The second sticks with a thud so satisfying the whole group erupts. Within minutes everyone has a very serious personal technique and a theory about why it works. Some aim for the bullseye. Some aim for the RSVP that still hasn't come back. When the bride's axe lands, the cheer is loud enough to count as a rehearsal for the wedding.
Everyone throws, for a full hour. Cocktails come later, because aim matters.
Then the weekend changes outfits. At the Bach Pad the bags hit the floor and the axe stories get retold from the couch, a little bigger every time. The playlist goes on. The outfit vote is held right there in the living room. Somewhere between the second outfit and the final lipstick, the girls who were throwing axes a few hours ago have become the baddies of the night, and the bride is the sharpest of the lot.
At our city cocktail bar, the girls' table is reserved, with a cocktail each arriving as you do. Share plates follow, the kind that get passed round and quietly fought over. Then the bride's bonus cocktail arrives, and the table toasts her best throw of the day. It has already been exaggerated twice.
Next, the night slips into our laneway cocktail lounge. Entry is covered, your VIP booth is reserved for the next two hours, and in the middle sits the girls' bottle of bubbly. The booth becomes the place to land between songs. The dancefloor is right there, and sooner or later the whole booth empties onto it at once.
Back at the Bach Pad, shoes off, the couch debrief rules on the best throw of the day and then argues about it until it becomes legend. The bride's throw gets a recount. It still wins.
