What happens at a hens high tea

The tea is served. The stories follow.

A hens high tea with My Ultimate Hens is tiered stands of sweet and savoury bites, a toast to the bride and her holding court at one beautiful table, with the rest of her day planned around it in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Perth or Adelaide.

It’s the hens where everyone makes a little effort. The earrings come out, the group chat argues about florals, and the bride finally has the occasion she’s been saving that dress for. Then you sit down, the stands arrive, and the afternoon turns into what it was always about: the people around her, swapping the stories only they know.

Someone asks how they first met her. A friend starts the story, another adds the bit she left out, and the bride puts her cup down because she’s laughing too hard to drink.

Every good hens high tea, at about the second tier
  1. A pink teapot, gold-rimmed teacups, roses and a My Ultimate Hens high tea menu beside a tiered stand of sandwiches and sweets

    Before anyone arrives

The table is set and waiting

Stands, teacups, flowers, the works. All she has to do is walk in.

  2. Hands in white lace gloves raising coupes over a table of fresh flowers

    She walks in

    Straight into the first toast

A glass of bubbly goes up the second she sits down, and she gets the head of the table, obviously.

  3. A table of three tiered stands with scones, jam and cream, sandwiches and sweets, and cups of tea

    The stands arrive

    Savoury first, then the scones

Ribbon sandwiches up from the bottom, then the scones, and the great jam-or-cream debate, which nobody has ever won.

  4. A hens crew laughing together on a rooftop lounge with drinks as bubbles float past

    Somewhere around the second tier

    Pinkies up, stories out

One guest raises her pinkie as a joke, the whole table copies her, and the old stories start coming out.

  5. Friends laughing and raising their cocktails over a grazing table on a rooftop

Between the second and third tier

    The toasts land

Her sister, her school friend, her mum. Short, sweet and a little bit teary, with a glass in every hand.

  6. A dessert table of tiered stands, gold macarons and cakes in front of a polka dot wall with the bride's name in gold glitter

    Before anyone touches the macarons

    The photo of the table

Then the one with everyone in it, you included. That’s the photo the group chat is still using next year.

  7. The bride in a white dress and hat hugging her friend on a city rooftop

    Then

    The day carries on

To a rooftop, a show, a cocktail class or dinner, whatever the rest of her hens looks like.

And you? You booked one thing, then sat down and ate the scones like everyone else.

Ways to do a hens high tea

Ten ways to pour it, from sweet to cheeky. Tap the one that’s her and we’ll keep it in mind when you tell us about her.

A little fizzy

High tea with bubbles, bottomless or cocktails

The hens version of high tea: bubbles beside the scones and something stronger in the teapot. Our hens high teas start with a glass of bubbly, and our cocktail high teas pour each girl a cocktail from her own teapot. On our tarot high tea, a reader turns the cards for every guest and saves the bride for last. Bottomless high tea and a gin flight are the ideas everyone saves, so tell us if that’s her.

A little fizzy

High tea with a view

Up high on a rooftop or a sky-high deck, the city spread out below and the bride in the seat with the best view. Sweet treats in the clouds, then a glass of bubbly while the light goes gold. It does wonders for the photos, too.

A high tea cruise

Tiered stands on the water, with the harbour or the river sliding past and nobody needing to be anywhere else. One of our Melbourne crews did it on a glorious sunny day, and the chocolate tarts got a review all of their own.

Dress-up

A Bridgerton high tea, or Mad Hatter

Gowns, gloves, pearls and a fan for the bride, with a “Dearest Gentle Reader” toast that announces her as the season’s diamond. Or go Mad Hatter: mismatched teacups, a “drink me” tag on the bubbles and the bride crowned queen of the table. The dress-up is half the fun.

Cheeky

Drag high tea, hosted by our queen

Our drag queen takes the head of the table, roasts her partner (lovingly), runs the toasts and crowns the bride somewhere between the scones and the sweets. High tea manners have never been so loud.

03 the posh bits

High tea or afternoon tea? What a hens high tea is

Same tiers, different accent.

In Australia, “high tea” means an afternoon spread on tiered stands: savoury on the bottom, scones in the middle and sweets on top, with tea and, for a hens, bubbles.

In Britain the same thing is called afternoon tea, and a UK hens afternoon tea, afternoon tea hen do or hen party afternoon tea is exactly this, just with more rain. “High tea” there was once a working family’s evening meal. Nobody at your table needs to care.

A hens high tea usually runs around two hours at the table, which is the sweet spot: long enough for every tier and every toast, short enough that the day still has somewhere to go.

The savoury tier: sliders, smoked salmon and ribbon sandwiches
Bottom: savoury
Scones with jam and cream under a tier of little cakes
Middle: the scones
The sweets tier: chocolate slices, little cheesecakes and pink meringue domes
Top: the sweets

The posh bits, decoded

  • Eat bottom tier up. Savoury first, then the scones, then the sweets. Or don’t. She’s the bride.
  • Split the scone by hand. No knife through the middle, if you’re feeling fancy.
  • Jam first or cream first? A fight worth having. Pick a side and defend it all afternoon.
  • Pinkies up? Entirely up to you. Much funnier, though.

Three tiers, one rule: the bride picks first.

04 who’s at the table

The tea and the food are the stars here, so she gets every tier, every toast and the best seat in the house.

What a hens high tea costs

The package is the magic.

Our high tea hens packages usually sit around $150 to $300 per person. Each one is built as the whole celebration, with the rest of her day planned around the stands.

What moves it: her city, the view, what’s in the glasses, what comes after (a show, a topless waiter, a cruise, dinner) and whether you make a weekend of it.

A hens high tea for her: tiered stands, bubbles and the whole day built around it. Our high tea hens packages usually sit around $150 to $300 per person.

With us, the table is waiting when she walks in, the bubbles land as she sits down, and the next stop is already lined up for when the last tier goes.

06 the dress code

What to wear to a hens high tea

That outfit you’ve been waiting for an occasion to wear? She’s the occasion.

A woman in a white halter dress smiling with a cocktail in a coupe

The bride

White, the one different colour at the table. A veil, a sash or a white fascinator if she’s game, and her favourite earrings either way.

Three friends in a pink playsuit, a sequin wrap dress and a blue floral maxi raising their glasses on a rooftop

The girls

Garden-party dressy: florals, pastels or one colour together. A fascinator or a hat if you love one, gloves if it’s Bridgerton. A favourite blouse and trousers counts too.

A woman in a straw hat holding a glass of wine in a sunlit vineyard

The practical bit

Shoes you can stand in for the group photo, a layer for a rooftop or the water, and in summer, something that breathes.

Copy a dress code into the group chat

Garden party: florals, pastels, a hat if you have one. The bride wears white.

Bridgerton: empire lines, pearls, gloves, a fan. The bride is this season’s diamond, in white.

One colour together: everyone in blush pink, the bride in white in the middle of the photo.

Mad Hatter: something odd, something bright, one mismatched teacup brooch. The bride wears the crown.

More looks for every kind of hens: what to wear to a hens night.

07 pinkies up

High tea games for the hens

A few questions about the bride. A surprising number of opinions.

With the first pot

The Bride Would…

  1. Read out two choices: brunch or dinner, beach or snow, her song or yours.
  2. Everyone guesses which one the bride would pick.
  3. She reveals her answer. Three friends immediately object.
  4. Five or six rounds is plenty, then back to the scones.

Set up before the day

The newlywed quiz

  1. Before the hens, ask her partner ten questions about her and write down the answers.
  2. At the table, ask the bride the same questions.
  3. Read out what her partner said after each answer.
  4. Nobody keeps score. Everybody remembers question seven.

Over the scones

Spill the sweet tea

  1. Everyone writes one short, kind memory of the bride on a card.
  2. Pop the cards in the teapot (an empty one).
  3. The bride draws them one at a time and guesses who wrote each.
  4. School friends, work friends and her mum: everybody has a different chapter.

All afternoon

The pinkie-up rule

  1. From the first pour, every cup is held with the pinkie up.
  2. Catch someone with her pinkie down and she pays the bride a compliment.
  3. Out loud, to the whole table.
  4. By the third tier, the bride has never felt so loved.

To finish

A few words for her

  1. Everyone who’d like to writes the bride a few lines on a card.
  2. Gather them in an envelope before the stands are cleared.
  3. She reads them later, on her own, probably twice.
Two friends in black sparkle laughing as they share a macaron in a plush lounge

Pure theatre

Read her tea leaves

Swirl, flip the cup, squint dramatically, then tap for her fortune. Read it out in your most mysterious voice.

Hens high tea questions

The ones the group chat will ask you, answered before they do. Booking in general lives on our FAQ page.

What is a hens high tea?

A hens high tea is an afternoon of tiered stands, sweet and savoury bites and a toast at one table built around the bride. With My Ultimate Hens it comes inside a hens package, with the rest of her day planned around it.

What’s the difference between high tea and afternoon tea?

Nothing that matters at a hens. In Australia “high tea” is the tiered afternoon spread, and in Britain the same thing is called afternoon tea.

Is a hens high tea the same as a kitchen tea or bridal shower?

No. A kitchen tea or bridal shower is usually for the wider family and gifts, while a hens high tea is the bride’s celebration with her crew, bubbles and a little mischief, and plenty of brides have both.

How long does a hens high tea last?

Our hens high teas usually run for around two hours at the table, then the day carries on to whatever’s next: a rooftop, a show, a cocktail class or dinner.

How much does a hens high tea cost?

Our high tea hens packages usually sit around $150 to $300 per person. The city, the view, the drinks and what comes after set where yours lands.

Can we have bubbles or cocktails at a hens high tea?

Yes. Every one starts with a glass of bubbly, then it’s tea, coffee or a cocktail poured from your own teapot.

What do we wear to a hens high tea?

The bride wears white and the girls go garden-party dressy in florals, pastels or one colour together, with a fascinator if you like. More ideas in what to wear to a hens night.

Is high tea good for a pregnant bride or friends who don’t drink?

Yes. The tea and the food are the stars, so nobody misses out and everyone gets a toast.

Can Mum, the aunties and her nan come?

Yes. A high tea is one of the easiest hens days for every age at the table, and the pinkie-up rule catches everyone eventually.

Can we have a drag queen or a topless waiter at our high tea?

Yes. Our drag queen can host the table and crown the bride (drag queen hens parties), or our topless waiter can keep the teapots and glasses moving (topless waiter hens parties).

Can we do a themed high tea, like Bridgerton?

Yes. Bridgerton gowns and gloves or a Mad Hatter table both suit a high tea beautifully, and the dress-up is half the fun.

What games can we play at a hens high tea?

The Bride Would, the newlywed quiz, a tea-leaf fortune and a pinkie-up rule all work sitting down. There are more in our hens party games.

High tea or bottomless brunch for the hens?

Brunch if she wants an early, loud start and the day moving fast; high tea if she wants it slower, prettier and later, with every age at the table.

Which cities do you do hens high teas in?

Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Perth and Adelaide. Start with her city: Sydney hens parties, Melbourne hens parties, Brisbane hens parties, Gold Coast hens parties, Perth hens parties or Adelaide hens parties.
